An excellent film. When you want the "bad guys" to win! The unlayering of relationships was a great slow reveal. Interesting questions around morality/ethics & where one's sympathy actually lies!!
5
A moving film which managed to involve me throughout. Its heart is in the right place. Some wonderful characters - particularly Grandma!
5
Deep, touching, warm - brilliant film.
5
What a film. What a team. You know how to choose them.
5
I'd seen it before. Just as good 2nd time round.
5
I thought both these films were wonderful!

Brilliant movie that I wanted to watch. I'm Japanese so easy to watch it. Thank you for showing this!

A deep, tender, intriguing film about what real families's bonds are about.

Thanks!

Wonderful film. Marvellous acting. Poiquait

Interesting insight into Japanese life not often portrayed in films.
5
Compassionate showing of a damaged society where human values override blood relationsips. Beautifully filmed and acted
5
Very well produced and directed account of life at the bottom of the heap! It certainly questions the assumptions we have of 'parenthood' and survival. The adult characters seemed to have prodigious appetites!
5
Thought the short had a great message; we must all consider the impact our actions have on our children. Main film raised the very pertinent question of what parenting really means. Very well acted, if a little slow at times, but a most thought provoking film!
5
Such a beautifully tender tale - storytellingat its best. Tour de force!

5
Moving! Police destroyed the relationships everyone got from the 'family'. They were happy!
5
Really thoughtful - but also humourous. Really got me thinking about what family really is and whether it can be replaced.
5
One of the best things Fleet Film have ever screened. Fantastic acting. Really fascinating subject.
5
Teriffic film. A slow burn to start but a powerful ending.
5
Extremely moving film. Really enjoyed the chemistry amongst the "family" members and the lighter moments.
5
Surprise ending! A woman willing to sacrifice her freedom for her "family" can be called a mother.
5
Short was a bit preachy! Shoplifters was lovely. One of my favourites from this season.
5
Compelling and nuanced. Very glad to have seen it.

What is family? Is it the link/connection we have with others rather than just blood. Lovely film.

Thought provoking film. What might have been? Bonds of love, belonging and sadness.

Such a charming film with so much affection. Loved it.

Loved it.

Made me smile but tinged with sadness. Twists & turns to keep it interesting - moving & heart wrenching.
4
Interesting and captivating in a gently way. Good to see a Japanese film.
4
Good story. What interesting twists & lots of noodle eating - can't believe you would bury grandma in the corner of the living room.
4
Sadly as life is lived in many countries but rewarding insight into humanity.
4
Touching short film. Main film - interesting exploration of adult/child relationships and what loving xxx really means.
4
An excellent film with impressive, totally credible performances from all the cast, particularly the children. Another film where I felt I was watching real people in real situations
4
Very clever short film - xxx & pithy. Main was interesting, well acted & as with life, uncertain ending!

The slow unwinding of the film reveals that it is not quite as it seems as far as the back ground of the characters is concerned. Wonderful acting, especially by the children when shoplifting, which helps to supplement their poor life style. Shows the seedier side of Japan, slum housing and well meaning social workers who make terrible errors in relocating the children.
4
Thought provoking. Poignant.
4
Sound louder - not so easy to hear.

Glad I saw this one. Moving and complex. The childrens's faces, so still yet so full of emotion.

Interesting film on relationships

4
Moving, well executed - a bit slow moving, but the seats don't help
4
Good film, strange society.
4
A nice insight into the world of a major Japanese city. You really feel for the population that can't provide for themselves and that fall through the net. Also that family is not always blood.
4
Fabulous!

Moving.

Enjoyed the film. Very interesting.
4
Excellent acting. How crime does not pay.
4
V thought provoking insight into Japanese society and also the questions of 'What if family'? Excellent acting from the children.
4
Great acting from people who are more like family than many.
4
This was a beautifully made & very moving film. Excellent acting. Very sad, but so much shown in the actors' faces. What is right and what is wrong - a lot to question about their actions. Do the Japanese really eat that much?!!!
4
A thought provoking film without an ending.
4
Started well but seemed to run out of steam.
4
Very long!
4
A study of love and respect but I wish the little girl had a happy resolution. Thank you.
4
Tenderness in the midst of an amoral poor family
4
V good. Heartwarming in places. Hint of a very sad ending.

4
Both were very touching if a little slow. Acute observation and real characters & situations created. Very sad conclusion.
4
Two well matched films. Slow moving like a French film often is, and layers peeled back to reveal the unexpected.
4
Thought provoking film showing you don't need to be a biological family to create a loving unit.
4
4
Very good, but a sad ending.
4
Short - very touching. Main - At times hard to follow - but very moving - & so sad at the end.
4
A beautiful thought provoking film. We might well become a bit better humans after watching it.

Mmm. The jury is out - touching, thought provoking AND very slow
3
Very slow, very sad. Couldn't see the subtitles well so couldn't follow it all.
3
A beautiful film. Lovely emotions & love & kindness. Pity about al the "eating scenes".
3
Interesting aspect of Japanese life.
3
I don't wish to comment so soon.
3
Rather dark & confusing - not for me!
3
Lovely children but far too slow, nearly fell asleep. Subtitles difficult to see.
2
I am sure it is very good - but not for me.
2
Absorbing but not very inspiring….
1
Very strange -very foreign - very different from The West. Rather slow - didn't enjoy it very much.
