The beauty and tranquillity of traditional Marsh Arab village life contrasted within the oppression of Saddam's Iraq as a 9-year-old girl is tasked with baking a cake for the dictator. Her escapades are, by turns, funny, heartbreaking and nail-biting.

Very powerful. To live in such chaos must be exhausting as was the horror of not knowing who was trustworthy or otherwise. No children should have to endure what those 2 had to. So sad that there will be many tonight doing exactly that. On a lighter note - I have never cared about a cockerel as I did about Hindi. |

Beautifully made. Poignant & realistic but would have loved some reassurance concerning Lamia's future. |

Excellent. Hard watch. Another film that shows how the general population can be manipulated. A shame that the person behind me was vaping. |

Certainly a film I wouldn't have seen outside the Film Club. Children played their part v well. Would be good if some of our youngsters were to see life in a regime!! |

Excellent film. So sad to see how horrid male adults are towards the children. Those school kids must have gone to school fearful of what would happen each day. Cruel regime and perhaps it's still happening. |

Beautiful, heartbreaking! I loved it but it also made me feel angry & frustrated at the arrogance of dictators & their total immorality & megalomania. |

A beautiful film. A rare window into life in Saddam's Iraq and the life of the 'Marsh Arabs' of the south. A reminder that the victims of sanctions and war are usually the innocent. |

Very good, very gripping. A good portrait of events there. The start had the same pictures & music as normal - maybe change these? |

Probably the best ever! Gave a real impression of what life was like. Sad & realistic. You'd almost think it was made for a Western audience. |

Very strong & moving film. So touching, shocking & sad with moments of happiness. So many parallels could be drawn with the modern Middle East situation. What an apt time to see it. I can only say Wow! |

Knowing that the producer had a similar childhood to the children in the film makes the film he produced even more impressive. |

A moving portrayal of life in Iraq under Saddam - the indoctrination, the fear, the repression, the struggles of ordinary people, trying to get by however they could - by barter, stealing, trickery, anything. The ending - the president's monumental cake - said it all really! |
